Last time I checked the bitset utility only worked on a specific brand of recorders, Ricoh I think...(has been awhile, I since bought a DVD player that will play +rw / -rw discs just fine).

Were you trying +R discs, or +RW discs?  Did your friend use +R or +RW discs, or were they -R or -RW ?

I would bet it's that your player doesn't like the + spec discs.  What player is it?

I have tried using both DVD+R and DVD+RW media.  Neither has worked.  The DVD my friend lent me was DVD+R, and it was burned using the exact same software and it works on my stand-alone player.

My DVD drive is the Phillips SDVD6004 that goes into the modular bay of my Inspiron 8500.  Here are the specs for it: http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/storage/p53101/en/index.htm.

I am sure that my recorder uses the + discs, as seen in those specs.

Thanks for all the help.

I have the same problem with my i8500, good to see I'm not the only one!

When I burn dvd video, I am unable to read it with my laptop, while the disc works fine on standalone players, and other laptop and desktop machines.

I called dell, and got a replacement.  It just got here now (same revision number) and has the same problem.

This is getting really frusturating, and I'm thinking that I might try to get dell to write me a chqeue for the difference between the dvd+r and the cd+rw/dvd combo, and forget about burning dvd's..

I also have this problem with data dvd's (not all the time though) where the discs I write I can't always read (either the disc works, or it doesn't, not that any given disc works sometimes and not others - just to clarify)

Hi,

i have a Inspiron 5150 and the same problem. It seems it's not a Laptop-Problem. It comes from the DVD-Drive. I hope someone can help.
