Annoying Harddrive Clicks - Firmware upgrade needed but no Floppy on system

Hi, I have a D600 with a HTS548040M9AT00 hard drive.  It clicks continuously when the machine is sitting idle and is very annoying and distracting for myself and others.  I've attempted to download the latest firmware for this however my system does not have a floppy drive and the firmware upgrade is requiring this. Has anyone put together a CD boot for this firmware upgrade?  It should be a standard offering by Dell now that they are shipping laptops without floppy drives.

Adventureboy, Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum. The solution that you need is available on the Downloads site.  Choose to download the version that does not require a floppy disk.

I am also trying to fix this hardrive clicking problem, but do not have a floppy drive. I have downloaded the R81871.exe, extracted its contents, and copied the files to more CDs, my iomega HDD, and a USB 2.0 Flash drive more times than I can count. I cannot get my machine to boot or reboot to one of these devices. I have changed the boot order using F2 and I have also executed a one-time boot order using F12 - but nothing happens. I am surely overlooking something, but I don't know what. Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.....
