This drive is clearly faulty. It's beyond me why people have been having problems with this drive, and then they send it in my new Inspiron 8500.

successfully burnt a couple of bin/cue's at 16x over the weekend....will see if i can get it faster

my thoughts on this now are that possible the dell pre-install of roxio seems to block aspi from working properley or that the samsung is fussy about the cd-r media

when i get hold of some cd's stamped to burn to at least 24x i'll see if i can get it to go faster

Have you tried burning a "hybrid" image.  That is, one that can be accessed by both Mac OS9 and Windows.

I have had no success burning these on the SN-324B, no matter what speed or brand of CD media.

Furthermore, when I try to make a backup of one of these types of disks, I get all sorts of errors reading the raw data, meaning that I can not make a backup of the disk.

I do not have these problems with any other CD writer that I have used, using the same disks, OS and burning software

A friend has the exact same problems on his Dell laptop of the same model.

I even reinstalled the OS and did not install EasyCD Creator.  I still have the same problems.

It looks to me like a hardware or firmware problem of the drive.

I would suggest you call Dell and insist on a replacement drive being sent out to you. Usually they'll ask for diagnostic results - I've gotten a drive replacement with a read/write error showing.

But with the replacement drive, there was a problem with reading a particular kind of copy protection, and they offered to replace the drive on that basis, even though it was functioning properly for everything else (I decided to keep it for the time being). And they'll replace hardware even if you don't have diagnostic errors to back up your experience, but it takes longer. If you don't get a good tech the first time, keep calling back until you get someone you can work with - and try all of their suggestions, even if you've tried them before... if you work with them, they're more likely to work with you.

Hey

I have the same combo drive SN-324B

My drive can burn Mode 2/ 2352 but not Mode 1/ 2352 bin/cue files

I dont know why

I just edit the cue file, replacing "Mode1" with "Mode2" and then it works

Hope this is usefull

Here's a website explaining the difference.

i have a 600m with this cdrw/dvd drive.  i cannot seem to burn more than 7 tracks using the windows media player cd burning utility.  i have tried using roxio, but the same problem still persist.  i am wondering if anybody has this problem also????   i'll probably call dell and have them send me another drive.

Does anybody know why Nero gives me this message when i try to burn a CD: Power calibration error?

It starts with the lead-in and when it gets to 3% it fails showing this message. If there is any use, my model is Samsung SN-308B. As i have inferred from latest messages, this type might cause some problems. Somebody tell me why?

Thanks a lot.

A.

Lakdetulibro,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
The following information may help.
How to Fix the Power Calibration Error with a Samsung DVD/CD-RW SM-308B Combo Drive.

I, too, am having the same issues mentioned previously in this thread, most notably, the "burn an entire CD but no files show up when done" problem. Apart from getting a new drive, has anybody since come up with a solution for this? Moderators? Help? Please?!!!!

Thanks,

Jon

Bootylactin,

What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?
What drive model do you have?
What operating system are you using?

Karell,

Thanks for the reply, I would have responded sooner but I've spent the last 10 days evacuated due to the California wild fires.

My drive model is the Samsung SN-324B on an Inspiron 8200.
My OS is XP Home.
Troubleshooting steps I've tried so far are using different CDR media and several different burning programs (Easy CD, Nero, CDRWin).

What I CAN do:
I can back up files to CD using EZCD. These burn fine and are recognized on all systems I've tested.

What I CAN'T do:
Specifically, I cannot burn CUE/BIN files or .ISO files. I've tried the "Record CD from Image" option in Easy CD, it goes through the burn cycle, and when done, the disk shows no files, and is unreadable by all systems I've tested (desktop at home, two desktops at work). The same goes for Nero and CDRWin.

Incidentally, a friend who bought an Inspiron 8500 burns all of the above with no problems. His drive is:

P0648 Assembly, CDRW/DVD, Small Form Factor, Hitachi LG Data Storage, DMOD, V2

If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks!

Jon

I have an inspiron 8500 and I have the exact same problems burning bin/cue isos. I am going to try the mode 2 suggested above and post of it works or not.

oh yeah, and the original way I worked around this was to use isobuster to extract all the files from the bin file into a temporary directory which I would then burn to the cd. This has some problems though, because some cds which I have done this for aren't detected.

Yup, changing it to mode 2 in the cue file works.

Hey

After a little experience :

After editing the CUE file and burning a few cd's, i found that the files are being corrupted; some are good, and some are bad.

So i wont recommend editing mode 1 to mode 2.

I got a new cd-burner instead which worked fine.
