upgrading cpu of DELL XPS L502x i3 2310M to i7-2860QM
Hi everyone I want to upgrade my Delll XPS L502x from i3-2310M. my chipset is HM67 and motherboard model is dell "0YR8NN". I have seen many posts where i7-2670QM is installed on "0YR8NN" motherboard but I could not find motherboard model for i7-2860QM. Can anyone suggest should I go with i7-2670QM or i7-2860QM.

Welcome to the Dell Community @kspannu
You can use both.
The "TDP" for both is the same and would run a little hotter.

The question is the price and availability???

I have successfully upgraded laptop with i7-2860QM and replaced my HDD with SATA SSD. It is working really good now.

Hi @kspannu , I did the same thing but unsuccessfully. black screen right after turning the laptop on. I put the old cpu back and it works just fine. Could you please tell me which version of bios are you using and firmware in case you upgraded it?
thanks

The latest BIOS for the system is a good idea before trying the CPU upgrade:
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/xps-l502x/drivers
That said, this is an aging system with aging voltage regulators on the system board. The CPU you're installing draws 30% more power than the i3 you had. A marginal voltage regulator could be at fault here as well.

@kspannu Thanks. Since we have the same motherboard and it is meant for slower cpu I though that maybe the 28xx series was not 100% supported but I was wrong. You don’t even had to upgrade to the latest bios. It must my cpu. I will replace it

@ejn63 unfortunately I already have a 26xx processor installed. The power required is pretty much the same

It's not, though - the i3 is a 35W CPU -- the i7 is 45W, or almost 30% more power-intensive.

Agreed, but that was with new systems - not systems pushing a decade old with aging voltage regulators aboard. It's still very possible that the CPU is fine, while the voltage regulators are not able to supply the 30% greater power requirements of the quad core CPU.

@mimmo81 Are you using 130watt adapter?

@kspannu @Yeah. My old cpu is already 45w. Let’s hope the new one works #fingercrossed
