So far about all I could find was to re-install the software for the optical mouse and or remove the mouse from Device Manager and re-boot. I thought there were some issues with optical mouse in regards to SP2 but have not come across it yet, maybe I was dreaming .. :)

Thanks for the reply Predator - I finally got on to Dell Tech Support (was pleasantly surprised by the response I got). Apparently I need to have Cyberlink PowerDVD 5.0 to run this. Not sure why it wasn't included with the system, but that's a separate issue. I installed the trial version, and it certainly seems to have fixed the problem.

Further edit - if anyone else has this problem, you could also try turning off Hardware Acceleration at Display/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot. Thanks to Yithandra at Dell for help with this.
Thanks, Oldhamm. I have a Dimension 8400 that DID have the PowerDVD installed, and any DVD that was playing also hung (badly; could not ctl-alt-del) when my wireless mouse was moved. It also occurred when I used Windows Media Player and the Roxio player to view the DVD. I also tried different DVD's, same result. I read the replies to the original question, and decided to try the easiest thing, which was to turn off the hardware acceleration in the PowerDVD settings. IT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. Many thanks to you and these forums, which have been the source of more than a few solutions to problems I've encountered over the months and years.
