Problems Re-Writing CD-RW with NEC 1100A and Sonic Record Now

Question

Config: Dimension 4550 with NEC ND-1100A drive running Sonic RecordNow 6.5, WinXP SP2 Problem: Using RecordNow!, my drive writes & erases DVD drives perfectly. It even writes to CD-RW drive fine, but when I try to erase or overwrite a CD-RW disc, the program dosn't recognize it as an erasable media and gives me the message 'please insert erasable media' (or something to that efffect). When I right-click on the drive and select 'format' it doesn't recognize it as an erasable media either. My PC came with Roxio/Adaptec CD creater. That program writes/rewrites CD-RW discs perfectly so this can't be a problem with the drive itself. I've completely uninstalled the Roxio and the SONIC software--including editing the registry--and reloaded the SONIC software and have the same problem. I've tried disabling DLA. I've researched everything on the Sonic knowledge base and the DELL website and haven't been able to solve the problem. I'm inclined to believe that my best bet is to shell out $75 for the new Roxio Media Creater, but I'm scared I may have problems with IT. I've read dozens of posts to this site but nobody seems to have encountered this problem. Any ideas?

This is info I found on the Sonic Web site. This could be causing your problem.

XP SP2 corrects numerous security vulnerabilities and adds security enhancements to Windows XP and Internet Explorer. Sonic product compatibility testing has been in progress for several months and some minor compatibility issues exist with earlier versions of Sonic Desktop products.

Until a full qualification is completed and compatibility list posted we recommend that customers running Sonic Desktop products purchased before 8/1/2004 not install XP SP2. Please contact Sonic Desktop Support for further information.

Thanks. The problem--which I forgot to mention--is that this issue existed prior to the SP2 installation. At this point, I figure I'm doing something REALLY stupid or it flat-out doesn't work

Hi FPG,

To turn off the ability to using the built-in CD burner software that comes with XP do the following...

Open up Explorer
Right click on the drive that is your CD burner
Select Properties
Click Recording tab
Uncheck Enable CD
