This is info I found on the Sonic Web site.  This could be causing your problem.

"Important Announcement:

Sept 2, 2004

Microsoft's Service Pack 2 for Windows XP (XP SP2) started releasing on 8/10/2004. XP SP2 corrects numerous security vulnerabilities and adds security enhancements to Windows XP and Internet Explorer. Sonic product compatibility testing has been in progress for several months and some minor compatibility issues exist with earlier versions of Sonic Desktop products.

Until a full qualification is completed and compatibility list posted we recommend that customers running Sonic Desktop products purchased before 8/1/2004 not install XP SP2. Please contact Sonic Desktop Support for further information.

Hi FPG,

Check to see if you have windows XP burning enabled, if so, disable it.
Also verify that you have DMA enabled for the drive

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Thanks. The problem--which I forgot to mention--is that this issue existed prior to the SP2 installation. At this point, I figure I'm doing something REALLY stupid or it flat-out doesn't work

Thx--I'll give it a try. How do you disable XP burning?

Hi FPG,

To turn off the ability to using the built-in CD burner software that comes with XP do the following...

Open up Explorer
Right click on the drive that is your CD burner
Select Properties
Click Recording tab
Uncheck Enable CD

Best Regards,
Jeff
