the_irony,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Make sure that you have all codecs and DIVX versions for your DVD drive.  Also, you should check to see if you have all of the most current software patches for your DVD software.

In order to make a burnt DVD+R as compatible as possible you need to burn it with a booktype setting of the DVD-ROM. Not all DVD burners allow you to change the booktype.

Thank you both for your response. If I could ask for a little more advice....

What software should I be looking for? I upgraded to DivX9, updated Sonic to dual layer etc but the drive still can't read dual layer disks. I have tried this with a number of DVDs from my local store now and I note any which say "Dual Layer Media" cannot be played in the drive (NEC 6100A) as the laptop (Inspiron 9100) cannot detect the media...it simply spins and clicks. All other media is fine. I can copy DVDs no problems - provided the drive can read the source to begin with.

Could you pleas suggest some specific software that I should download/update.

Thanks v much

I use Nero and there is an option to bookmark how the disc is burnt. This of course depends, like I said before, if your drive actually allows you to change the bitsetting as not all drives have firmware that allow action.
