I have one.... with problems.

Couldn't burn audio cds unless reducing speed of drive.
Now the thing won't play certain DVDs so I've been told I should be chasing up CODECs and the like.

I also have this drive....

It will not play certain DVD's either....

What have you been told to try to do?

I have called Dell's Tech Support and spent over 2 hours doing what they told me to do and it still is skipping and freezing frames when watching a dvd.

If anybody knows what is wrong with it please let me know!

I have one that I would like to blow up in front of the Board of Execs to show them how cruddy it is. I would like to see Michael Dells impression of this horrible drive and the so called 'quality control' they have at Dell. I need to find a way to release the anger I have towards this drive. Any suggestions anyone?:smileymad::smileysad:

Dell replaced my nec 6100a with a Sony DW-r56a that has issues as well. It will burn audio but sometimes wont recognize blank DVD disks, also when you burn to DVD disk it wont play in home DVD player! Even the nec burnt DVD that could be played on my home DVD player. WHAT IN THE WORLD AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW??? Oh ya get this dell wants to replace the mother board on my laptop, they think that maybe the problem I don't think so...

My stinking 6100A drive puts a lot of feedback on the 2nd through 4th tracks when burning a music cd.  Called Dell and they told me it was either my media or cd burning software, but after changing both multiple times, still experience the same problems.  I'm actually waiting for another service rep on the phone....been waiting 45 minutes.

One owner of a NEC DVD+RW ND-6100A with a bin full of dud CD's.

The problem is very obvious with Audio CD's, not playing properly on other CD players, including a $1600 CDJ. I should have looked at the Forums first. After trying many things to resolve the problem I am now going through the "technical" help calls routine with Dell. I understand they have to make sure you know what your talking about, that there is a problem, but I'm sure it would help Dell's public image if the technician actually knew something about computers.

Having looked through the Forums and seeing that other owners are having the exact same issue's with this model drive I would have thought the 6100 would be flagged on their system as problematic and replaceable.

One piece of interesting knowledge I was informed of by the "technician" was that to burn CD's on a Dell optical drive it is recomended by Dell that CD+RW be used (yes plus, we went over that a few times). I have never heard of this format, neither have some professional audio archivists and I cannot see such a thing on the Red or Orange Books. If the "technician" meant CD-RW I still find this annoying, since when do CD burners not burn CD-R's !?!?

I have since fixed the problem - I called Dell and demanded a replacement drive.  They replaced it with the 6500A, which burns DVD+/-R/RW.  I haven't had a problem yet (knock on wood).

I don't know exactly why they did.  I have the complete care warranty and I'd called 3 times, finally I told the guy I wanted a new drive, that I knew it wasn't a problem with my software or cds.  I also mentioned that I saw they were now installing the 6500 in their 700m's, and asked if they could send me that one.  He didn't really respond to that, but when it arrived, it was the 6500A.

Oh Joy !

The firmware link that Dell has sent me is for the NEC ND 2100 HH 8X
DVD+RW. Suprisingly it doesn't work for a NEC DVD+RW ND-6100A.

Ever get the feeling your not being listened to.
