It seems to me that this looks more and more like a possible bad batch of drives. ( even if xp is causing the access in the forst place) I have an 80 gig fitted to my 9100 which is about 6 months old. It is not suffering frm this malaise, though my 8100 which I bought 3 years ago ( and sold 5 months ago) had the ticking from new. It failed after 18 months or so but I travel a lot and hdd's are not unknown to fail.

I think the only solution is to change the brand. These ticking noise is characteristic of the the brands and also indicate they will fail eventually.

Does anybody know if dell carries hard drives other than Hitachi? I ask them on chat but they doesn't seem to know much detail on the brand. Does anybody have Wester Digital hard drisk in their inspiron?

I called Dell and they shipped me a new hard disk overnight. That is very fast.
Same Hitachi 80 gig model. Now to make things slightly complicated -
When I booted with new disk, it will not install properly. So I guess I had to install full OS myself. I went ahead and did not install the Dell XP Home.

Rather I installed own XP Pro, with no junks from Dell CD. and installed drivers. Now I see CPU performance at 0 when unused, and no ticking sound when left unattended. I begin to suspend the XP causing some constant acivity which causes tick. Maynot be hard disk fault. I have to do more tests to confirm this.
Now, I will later today evening load Dell's restore CD into replacement hard disk and see how it behaves. If it is also quiet then, problem is hard disk . Otherwise XP is causing problem.

Then I will load XP pro to my first disk and see how it goes.

My xp pro is original not any vendor specific. also it is not SP2. Dell had SP2 preinstalled and in their CD.

My original hard disk had a mnaufacturing date of Oct 2004.

Replacement had a date of Sep 2004 and told refurbished in the cover. Does that mean replacement is a used one?

The Hitachi drives are noisey, I have had three 7k60's and all made the ticking sound. This can be lessened to some degree by using Hitachi's Feature Tool -Acoustic Management.
