In reality, you will probably only run into problems without the latest BIOS update if your laptop uses a Prescott or the latest Celeron CPU.

Thanks so much for the info. All our systems have Intel pentium processors and I usually update the bios as needed. These are used mainly for classroom presentations on our campus.
Thanks again all

SP2 works without a BIOS update on my 5150. No problems at all!

I generally agree with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" modo, but in this case SP1 *IS* broken: several security holes which are covered by SP2....
On topic:
I run XP SP2 on my Inspiron 4000, works like a charm. Same goes for our 4 Inspiron 5100 and our 2 Inspiron 5150, and our 11 Inspiron 2650.
Do yourself a favor and put SP2 on a fresh install, not some 4 years old windows installation which is already "buggy".

If you have a bit of an oddball machine or a current machine with known issues with SP2, try creating a slipstreamed CD using your XP install CD or restore/reinstallation CD. I've had very good luck with installing SP2 using this method. Yes it does mean reformatting the HD and reinstalling all the software and personal files after the OS is reinstalled, but when finished I end up with a rock solid XP SP2.
Note: if your machine has a Prescott or Pentium M processor then you may have specific issues relating to the CPU speed settings. You'll need to research this for your machine and apply the necessary updates/tweaks to fix it.
