It works fine with my 4100 So you shouldn't have any problem with your 4000.
In reality, you will probably only run into problems without the latest BIOS update if your laptop uses a Prescott or the latest Celeron CPU.

Thanks so much for the info.  All our systems have Intel pentium processors and I usually update the bios as needed.  These are used mainly for classroom presentations on our campus.

Thanks again all

I suggest NOT upgrading to SP2. I have it on a i8200 but the first thing I will do when I have a chance is to format the drive and reinstall XP SP1 only. JMO

SP2 works without a BIOS update on my 5150. No problems at all!

I installed SP2 on my 5150 w/ XP Pro and had problems.  After fighting with it, I went back to SP1 with which I've had no problems at all.  Note, however, that I'm using the origional BIOS that came with the 5150.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Downloaded SP2 to I8200 & 600M and had big problems. Reinstalled SP1 on both, and laptops are fine and working properly. Have a lot of graphic programs and SP2 doesn't seem to integrate well with them. Will wait when MS has worked out the glitches. MP.

I have no problems on my 5150, but I put it on right after a reformat. All I did was install the XP SP1, i then installed the drivers needed, then installed SP2 before any other apps and it seems to work without issue.

I generally agree with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" modo, but in this case SP1 *IS* broken: several security holes which are covered by SP2....

On topic:

I run XP SP2 on my Inspiron 4000, works like a charm. Same goes for our 4 Inspiron 5100 and our 2 Inspiron 5150, and our 11 Inspiron 2650.

Do yourself a favor and put SP2 on a fresh install, not some 4 years old windows installation which is already "buggy".

As for the problems encountered with SP2 on a fresh install, can someone point me to a thread which deals with that issue ? Thx.

Best regards,
Rick.

Flawless install on both 8100 and 5100.  Works great with no problems.

If you have a bit of an oddball machine or a current machine with known issues with SP2, try creating a slipstreamed CD using your XP install CD or restore/reinstallation CD. I've had very good luck with installing SP2 using this method. Yes it does mean reformatting the HD and reinstalling all the software and personal files after the OS is reinstalled, but when finished I end up with a rock solid XP SP2.

Note: if your machine has a Prescott or Pentium M processor then you may have specific issues relating to the CPU speed settings. You'll need to research this for your machine and apply the necessary updates/tweaks to fix it.

I installed SP2 on a newly reinstalled Win XP and it worked like a charm on my Inspiron 8200.
