Do the technical support staff monitor these threads?

I am having the exact same problem.  I have updated to the newest firmware and also tried using different brand media (DVD-R) per their suggestion.  This is not helping.

What do we do to fix this?  Again, the problem is that even though I can burn (successfully) a DVD-R disc (either data or video), when I try to use the same drive (8631) to read it it locks up.  However, on other machines and drives it reads fine.  It makes no sense that the same drive that burns a DVD cannot read it.

Ted & Tiny,

If you have tried the firmware and it did not work, enter the BIOS and verify that the IDE channel is set to Auto or ON and that both Drive 0 & Drive 1 are "on" as well. Also click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 14 & 17 for DMA. Move or make sure the 8631 is setting in the Top Bay,with Dell systems using Cable Select, this makes the drive the Master.
If none of this help, then contact Dell by phone, be firm but polite, state all you have tried and respectfully request the drive replaced.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Hi Tiny,

I recall one or two maybe, stated Dell replaced the drive with a NEC 3450a. You can strongly request the same, asking never hurts, be firm but polite.

Best Regards

Hi, I face the same problem (locked drive, no shutdown possible) with burning a number of DVD+R disks of a certain brand. A day later I purchased disks from an other brand and was successful to burn five disks until now. No problem at all!

I first used a Nashua DVD+R (1-4X) and later Sony (AccuCORE) DVD+R (1-8X).

One of the Nashua disk past the burn process without locking the system, but has many read errors on two different DVD readers.

So it looks that the brand of disk is influencing the behavior of the Philips DVD writer. May be the firmware hangs under certain conditions, depending on the disk type causing the lock.

The system is a Dimension 5000, with the factory installed DVD writer in the lowest bay. I am using Nero 6.6 as burn package.
