Perform the following steps:

  1. Close all currently open programs.
  2. Open the Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
  4. Right-click Secondary IDE Controller and then click Uninstall.
  5. Click OK to Confirm Device Removal.
  6. After the Device Manager tree refreshes, restart the system.
During system startup, Windows will re-detect the controller and attached devices.
  7. Once the driver is installed , restart the computer again.
  8. And the issue should be resolved.

Hi Rob,

To add with Mike`s, to cover Autoplay, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, articles 57 through 60.

If it is a driver issue, same CD/RW link, Section 20, article 3; Section 15, article 1; Section 11, article 2.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I have tried everything suggested - I am not so concerned about the Autoplay, but all the register settings were correct. I did find a 2000 dvd driver on a web site called "driverguide.com" for the Artec DVD, but am concerned about installing it as it was issued prior to XP

What is so weird is the evrything appears to work except that the sound is messed up. I might try changing the positions of the two drives, making the DVD drive 1 and the Dell CD burner drive 2. I suppose it could be a motherboard fault, but that would seem unlikely,
