Hi Grable,

If you do not mind, please list your Dell system, the name / model of the DVD burner, burning software, steps used to try the copy, etc...

Best Regards

Thanks for replying, Predator.  I'll do my best to give you the details you requested.

The Dell system is a 2400 with P4 processor.  The DVD is a Philips +-RW DVD8631.  Then, on the Dell invoice, Sonic Software for DVD/RW+R is listed.  However, on the desktop I seem to have something called RecordNow! - unless, of course, that's simply an instruction!

I successfully copied from DVD to DVD when I was testing the system when it arrived.  My latest attempt was to copy a file from my word processing package to CD R, then to CD RW then to DVD RW.  None of these attempts worked.  I used the resources disk diagnostic, but although in Dell's help section it said that I should have a writable CD to hand, at no point was I required to stick it in the drive.  The diagnostic also found that there was no audio output, although I'd watched a DVD on the computer that day and had perfect sound.

If you could give me any hints at all, I'd be very grateful.

Hi Grable,

Dell has had a number of issues with the Philips 8631 but before I suggest you try the Dell firmware update, consider using Windows XP Restore Feature, to roll the system back a day or before the problem started. I have the Microsoft article on this in Section 100, article 17 of the CD/RW link in my post.

Sonic`s software includes Recordnow which is what we call the Mastering software, hopefully the one you will use the most. DLA is Sonic`s Packet Writing programs, formats the disc to act like a "big Floppy"

If the roll back does not help, then consider applying the update / patch Dell has for Sonic in the Downloads for your system. Hover your mouse over the Product Support Tab above, click on Downloads, enter information for your system and browse the links. You will also find the firmware update for the drive under Removable Media Storage Devices.

Best Regards

Thanks again for your help, Predator.  I think I've got it sussed now - my problem was that I didn't realise you couldn't just 'save as' and prod the D drive, as if the CD or DVD were a floppy.  I've successfully copied a few files now and feel confident that the problem was me, not the hardware!

All the best.
