Hi Dave,

There is a setting in Windows Media Player to Turn on Error Corrections, some Members mentioned this helped theris.

Best Regards

Jeff,

Many thanks - have tried it, unfortunately problem persists, also got an error message (using Window Media Player v 10.00.00.3646), which Microsoft says is:

Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 9
Source: atapi
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_TIMEOUT
Message: The device, %1, did not respond within the timeout period.
Explanation - The attempt to read or write data timed out.
User Action - If there is a disc in the CD-ROM drive, it might need replacing or cleaning.

Interestingly, Creative Media Source v 1.00.61 CD player seems OK with the drive, as does RealPlayer v 10.5   The fickle finger of fate seems to be pointing to Window Media Player.

Regards,

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Considering the drive works with the other players, I too would tend to lean toward WMP.
I have some limited information, you may have already seen this but I`ll post it anyway. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 8-3, articles 15 & 17.

Best Regards

Jeff - thanks again. Unfortunately the drive will now not recognise a proprietary software CD (Nero):

"Please insert a disk into drive D:"

NB Drive E: is fine.

Any other suggestions appreciated - or is it time to log a fault with Dell ?

Regards,

Dave.

A quick update - changing the autoplay settings to 'default' has overcome the inability to read the proprietary CD. But proprietary audio CDs are still a problem: in that the *first* audio CD will play OK, but thereafter the system will not detect subsequent audio CDs.

Final update: after extensive testing with the help of Dell support last week (e.g., express and extended tesks using Dell Resource CD [+]), the drive was declared faulty and has been replaced today under extended warranty cover. The drive was exactly a year old.

Regards,

Dave.

[+] where the IDE CDROM section took half an hour to complete 2% of the corresponding test, due to extensive error messages: Extended test: "Error Code 0F00:021B Block 92 Flaw in medium or an error in the recorded data ...", etc.
