I need help badly.

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 computer and my DVD-RW Drive is a NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A drive. Well I can't get my drive to read or write any DVD-Rs. When I put a DVD-R in the drive and I click on the drive it brings a message up saying: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function." But when I put in Music CDs and Movie DVDs the drive is still able to read them and I'm able to listen to music or watch movies. The message only comes up with DVD-Rs that are blank or have already been written on. I really don't understand this and I have tried taking my computer to computer techs and they say they fixed it but they have not. I'm really frustrated right now because I feel like I'm just flushing my money away with these techs. I need help badly. Please help me out if you know what's going on. Thanks, so much.

Hi Tim,

Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, article 40 and see if the Microsoft article on that error message will help.

Best Regards!

that is a well known problem with oem dvd drives that came with, or was replaced by dell. these drives do not work well with different manufacturing discs. if you say tried a philips dvd- or + rw disc for example, it would probably have no problem recognising it. but with different disc manufacturers dvd's it will not notice the disc there. this is usually a case of bad quality dvd drives. it's that simple. usually if you go and buy a good dvd-+rw drive like sony that will have no problem with any kind of disc's. i had to figure this out before when i had the same annoying problem..

Hello Tim,

Normally I will step aside when someone else starts working the thread so I will drop a note or two and move on. I cannot seem to locate a NEC 3540A listed under Dell`s Manuals; are you sure of the model number or is this a retail drive?

If it is a Retail drive, check NEC site for a possible firmware update.
http://support.necam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/

If it happens to be Dell`s 3450A drive, then Dell does have a firmware update:
NEC 3450A.
But Please, do not try to flash a NEC 3540A drive with the Dell NEC 3450A firmware.

Best Regards

Jeff
