System not recognizing D or E drives

Hi,

I was trying to save some files to disc and when I chose the drive (either one) the computer kept asking for me to insert a disc into the drive.  For some reason it's not recognizing my disc drives.  Help

Shearon:

It would be helpful to know a few things:

  1. What model and operating system do you have?
  2. What kind of drives are your D and E drives? Hard drives, CD, DVD, etc.?
  3. What program are you using to copy these files to the drives?

If neither drive is recognized, I suggest you try removing the upper/lower filters as described here:

Hi,

Sorry I forgot to add that.  I have a Dimension 4100, and it's the CD and DVD drives.  I am trying to save files from my C drive to CD to free up room on my C drive.  I am using Window 2000 system, and I am trying to transfer files from Microsoft Office Word 2003.

I just finished chating with a Dell Support person and they had me download and install the following :

I would request you to please refer to the link below and download the software update for the same.

I have just finished rebooting and I am still having the same problem.  Thank you.

Hi,

I have removed the upperfilters and lowerfilters, but still no access to the cdrom drives.  What else can I do?

Thanks

If you could just provide a few more details, it would be helpful. Go to Device Manager, expand CD/DVD drives and post what models are listed.

Ok, your NEC DV-5700A is a DVD-ROM drive so obviously you can't save any files to that drive. That leaves the Sony CD-RW. Are you putting a blank CD-R in the drive before you try to save files? What kind of disc, i.e., brand and speed, are you using?

Hi,

I am using blank cd's, the same type I have always used.  Maxell CD_R Pro 80min/700 mb and PNY Technologies CD-R High Performance 80min/700mb

Yes, I'd say it's time to replace your drive. A new and much faster CD-RW drive will cost about $20. Here's one suggestion:
