In this video we show how to replace the rear I/O cover on an Alienware x16 R2 laptop. Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data. Also, ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. Disconnect all the attached peripherals.
To enter Service Mode, press and hold the B key on the keyboard, and then press the power button. Now, the computer will boot up and the Owner Tag information is displayed on the screen. Press any key to proceed, the computer will emit three short beeps and shut down.
To begin, remove the two screws and loosen the four captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Lift the base cover from the bottom left, then continue to work on the sides to open the base cover. And then, slide and remove the base cover.
If your computer is unable to enter Service Mode, disconnect the battery cable from the system board. Turn over your computer and open the display to access the power button. Press and hold the power button for five seconds to ground the computer and drain the flea power.
To remove the rear I/O cover, first remove the two screws securing the left Tron-light cable and disconnect it. Repeat the same steps to disconnect the right cable. Then remove the two screws securing the cover in place. Grasp the sides of your computer and push it outwards to remove it.
To install the rear I/O cover, align and slide it over the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Now replace the two screws to secure it in place. Connect the right Tron-light cable, and replace the two screws to secure it in place. Repeat the same steps to secure the left cable.
Connect the battery cable to the system board if the computer is not in Service Mode. Slide the tabs on the base cover under the rear I/O cover and snap the base cover in place. Tighten the four captive screws and replace the two screws that secure the base cover. Now connect the power adapter.
