In this video we show how to replace the wireless card on an Alienware x16 R2 laptop. Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data. Also, ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. Disconnect all the attached peripherals.
To enter Service Mode, press and hold the B key on the keyboard, and then press the power button. Now, the computer will boot up and the Owner Tag information is displayed on the screen. Press any key to proceed, the computer will emit three short beeps and shut down. To begin, remove the two screws and then loosen the four captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Lift the base cover from the bottom left, then continue to work on the sides to open the base cover. And then, slide and remove the base cover.
If your computer is unable to enter Service Mode, disconnect the battery cable from the system board. Turn over your computer and open the display to access the power button. Press and hold the power button for five seconds to ground the computer and drain the flea power.
To remove the wireless card, first remove the two screws securing the thermal shield on top of the card and then lift it off. Now, remove the screw securing the bracket on top of the card and then slide it off. Disconnect the antenna cables using a plastic scribe and slide the card out off the slot.
To install the wireless card, first place it into the slot. Match the antenna cables to the connectors by their color codes and connect them. And then align and place the bracket on the card. Replace the screw to secure the bracket. Next, align the thermal shield and secure it with the two screws.
Connect the battery cable to the system board if the computer is not in Service Mode. Slide the tabs on the base cover under the rear I/O cover and snap the base cover in place. Tighten the four captive screws, and replace the two screws that secure the base cover. Now connect the power adapter.
