Introduction
The serial number of the storage array is required when contacting Dell Technologies Technical Support.
A unique serial number identifies each PowerMax or VMAX storage array.
Serial numbers have two forms, one strictly a number and the other is preceded by two letters. For example:
The letters and first number indicate the location of manufacture. The next three numbers indicate the specific model of PowerMax or VMAX. In the command-line interface (CLI), the serial number is often used without the letters.
To get the serial number of the storage array:
There are three ways to find a storage array's serial number; from a sticker on the storage array, the Unisphere for PowerMax administration interface, or the command-line interface (SYMCLI).
From a sticker on the storage array:
The serial number is found on a small sticker on the storage array. For typical Dell rack installations, the sticker is at the top of the rack behind the front door and denotes the Serial Number/Numbers within the cabinet.
From the Unisphere for PowerMax web administration interface:
- Log in to the Unisphere for PowerMax web administration interface.
- In the Home screen or (alternatively) the Systems View, you will see a list of all PowerMax and VMAX storage arrays that are visible to the management host, shown by serial number.
From the command-line interface:
- Open a command prompt and log in.
- Run the following command to list all PowerMax and VMAX storage arrays that are visible to the management host:
