PowerStore: Cannot complete the operation when recovering virtual machines with VSI 10.6 / 10.7 and prior releases.

Symptoms

VMWare error when trying recovery test of VMs From VCenter with VSI, version 10.7 and below may report error : " Cannot complete the operation. See the event log for details. Since the temporary VM size cannot be detected, the temporary resource used for VM restore will be cleaned up. "

Cause

Affected version :

  • PowerStoreOS: any version
  • vSphere: any version
  •  Virtual Storage Integrator:  VSI 1.7 and below

 

If the VMs running during the PowerStore snapshot took system unable to manage allocated space to recovery the system.  Some tests done with powered down VMs also confirmed this statement. 

Resolution

This issue will be resolved in a future VSI release (10.8 or above).   This article will be updated when the updated  VSI for VMware vSphere Web Client  becomes available for download via dell.com/support

 

Workaround:

  • Create manually a view volume from PowerStore with the snapshot at the required virtual machine restoration date.
  • Mount the VMFS with a new signature in VCenter 
  • VMotion the VM to the recovery volume 
  • Unmount and delete the View Volume
