Hyper-V RCT Backup Error Failed to convert VM checkpoint of VM_NAME

Summary: In RCT backup workflow a checkpoint is created for every VM & once the backup is completed, the checkpoint is converted to a reference point with a unique ID and saved with the backup. Changed block tracking (CBT) utilize the reference point to identify changes since the last backup. The backup will be marked as invalid if the checkpoint conversion to reference point failed. ...

Symptoms

For VMs running in Windows 2016 Hyper-V Cluster backed-up using RCT backup technology, the backup might fail at the end of the backup, after the Rollover with the following error:
  • nsrnmmsv NSR error Failed to convert VM checkpoint of VM_NAME.
  • Cleaning set of indexes of saveset APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Hyper-V\VM_NAME as convert checkpoint or backup of all files has failed.

Cause

The problem could happen when NMM agent running on the Node owning the Cluster IP failed to retrieve VM path details from the remote cluster node (the node hosting the VM) because:
  • The VM Path contains unsupported special character like [ and ]
  • Or due to User permission issue prevent the backup user from retrieving VM details from remote node, which can be verified by:
    1. Using Powershell to verify the backup user permission:
      • Login to the node owning the cluster IP then open PowerShell (don't open it in elevation mode)
      • Run the command  Get-VM -ComputerName remote_host" // repeat the command for all hyper-v nodes.
        • The command should provide a list of all VMs running in the remote host.
      • If the command failed with error like the following, then fix the permission issue before running the backup:
        • get-vm : You do not have the required permission to complete this task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer remote_host.
    2. Move the failed VM to the node owning the cluster IP & run a test backup.
      • If the backup completed successfully then it is most likely a permission issue.

Resolution

  1. Relocate the VM if the VM path contains special character, to supported path.
  2. Make sure that backup user has the required privileges as "NetWorker Module for Microsoft for Hyper-V 18.2 (or later) User Guide"
