Data Domain: HA Rolling upgrade may fail for external enclosure firmware upgraded

Summary: This KB describes an issue that HA Rolling upgrade may fail for external enclosure firmware upgraded

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

HA Rolling Upgrade may fail on configurations that have serval SAS HBA ports connected to external enclosures when upgrading to release prior to 7.5.

Cause

In DDOS releases prior to 7.5, the enclosure firmware upgrade process for an HA configuration is executed during the failover that occurs after the first node has been upgraded and rebooted.
Depending on the topology, the number and type of external storage enclosures connected, and the starting and ending versions of enclosure FW, the time it takes to complete  the upgrades may exceed the time it takes for the second node to reboot and try to rejoin the HA pair. If that happens, the system will enter a degraded HA state and the upgrade process will stopped. Manual intervention is required to restore the to a good state.
Starting with DDOS 7.5, the enclosure firmware upgrade process is performed in the background as long as all drives and enclosures have 2 functioning paths. This allows HA failover to occur in reasonable amount of time.

Resolution

This has been resolved in 7.5 and later.
For the upgrade to pre-7.5, the workaround is:
Before HA upgrade, manually check the target build if any shelf FW upgrade would be involved. If yes, then do local upgrade instead of rolling upgrade. The drawback of the workaround is longer downtime(could be one+ hour) than rolling upgrade.
