Dell Unity: UDoctor generates Alert: "The Storage Processor has Link Aggregation configured on the same I/O Module"

Summary: This article explains the UDoctor alert: "The Storage Processor has Link Aggregation configured on the same I/O Module"

Symptoms

Unity systems may trigger a weekly alert “The Storage Processor has Link Aggregation configured on the same I/O Module”.

This is classified as “CRITICAL”, to highlight the criticality of NAS server being susceptible to a possible Data Unavailable situation in the event that the module used for configuring the Link Aggregation goes bad.

Cause

UDoctor will raise an alert if the Unity system has a Link Aggregation which is configured using ports from only one module while there are additional ports available from other modules for Link Aggregation.

If the module faults on one Storage Processor but the matching module in the peer Storage Processor is healthy, there is no automatic failover of the NAS servers resulting in data unavailable while the NAS servers are in this state.

Resolution

If the Unity system has ports available from multiple modules for creating a Link Aggregation, it is recommended to include ports from those different modules in the LA to create a true High Availability configuration in the event that one of the modules faults.

Additional Information

On some Unity Systems, UDoctor may raise a false positive alert even if the Link Aggregation has ports from different modules.

This can happen when the Link Aggregation has ports from OCP module and/or Baseboard / Onboard (embedded) ports along with ports from regular I/O Module.

This alert can be ignored if your Unity system has such a LA configuration.

The UDoctor code will be updated to include ports from OCP module and/or Baseboard / Onboard (embedded) ports in its algorithm for raising the alert

Link Aggregation can only be used for NAS Server interfaces so attempting to configure it on Ethernet ports that have existing iSCSI interfaces is prohibited from Unity Side.

Note: When configuring Link Aggregation, ensure the same ports are cabled on both SPs. This is necessary because in case of failover, the peer SP uses the same ports. Also, ensure the appropriate switch ports connected to the SP s are also configured for Link Aggregation. If the switch is not configured properly, communication issues may occur.  Ensure the switch ports on the connections from both SPs use the same VLAN addresses, if configured.
