Symptoms
Remote Management Console is not configured.
If the node's Operating System does not boot, the node cannot be reached remotely.
Cause
The Remote Management Console has not been configured at the factory, or this is a result of a hardware replacement.
Resolution
- Obtain the following information.
- Whether the Remote Management Console (RMC) on the node is to be set to shared (with eth0) or dedicated mode.
- The following IP addresses for the RMC channel:
- Remote Management Console (RMC) IP Address (IPADDR1)
- Netmask (IPADDR2)
- Default gateway (IPADDR3)
- Log in to the node as root user
- Save the existing RMC Configuration
ipmitool lan print 1 > /tmp/rmclan1
ipmitool lan print 4 > /tmp/rmclan4
- Clear the existing configuration
ipmitool lan set 1 ipaddr 0.0.0.0
ipmitool lan set 1 defgw ipaddr 0.0.0.0
ipmitool lan set 4 ipaddr 0.0.0.0
ipmitool lan set 4 defgw ipaddr 0.0.0.0
- Enable the RMC interface:
ipmitool raw 0x30 0xf8 0x01 0x01 0x01
Note: Enabling the RMC interface may take up to 30 minutes.
- Verify that the RMC is enabled
ipmitool raw 0x30 0xf9Note: If the RMC is enabled, the following output is displayed:
01 01 01
- Enter the appropriate commands as follows:
For dedicated mode:
For shared mode:
ipmitool lan set 4 access on
ipmitool lan set 4 arp respond on
ipmitool lan set 4 ipsrc static
ipmitool lan set 4 ipaddr IPADDR1
ipmitool lan set 4 netmask IPADDR2
ipmitool lan set 4 defgw ipaddr IPADDR3 Where IPADDR1, IPADDR2 and IPADDR3 are the appropriate IP addresses for each case.
For shared mode:
ipmitool lan set 1 access on
ipmitool lan set 1 arp respond on
ipmitool lan set 1 ipsrc static
ipmitool lan set 1 ipaddr IPADDR1
ipmitool lan set 1 netmask IPADDR2
ipmitool lan set 1 defgw ipaddr IPADDR3 Where IPADDR1, IPADDR2 and IPADDR3 are the appropriate IP addresses for each case.
- Set the wanted password for the RMM4 root user by typing
ipmitool user set name 2 root
ipmitool user set password 2 <PASSWORD> Where <PASSWORD> is the chosen password. The default password for the RMC ports is calvin.
- Review the settings to ensure correctness:
ipmitool lan print 1
ipmitool lan print 4
- Test access to the UI:
Point the web browser to: http://<IPADDR1>
Log in with the credentials specified in step 5
Log in with the credentials specified in step 5
- Repeat the above steps for every node in the Avamar grid
- Procedure complete
