Do you find it difficult to set the touch options in Windows 10 to set up a KIOSK unit?

 

This article is for those of you who are looking to use their Touch-enabled Dell computer as a KIOSK unit. However, you are having trouble finding the right way to disable functions such as:

  • Pinch and Zoom
  • Gestures
  • Swipes
Note: Microsoft is continually improving and changing the Windows 10 operating system. This guide was written in January 2019, and is updated as and when there are any significant changes or updates.

 

Touch options in Windows 10 settings

 

Note: Windows 10 Home is the only version of Windows 10 that does not support a KIOSK mode.

Note: These steps deal with the latest versions of the Dell Touchpad Driver, Application, and the Dell Touchscreen Driver.
 
Warning: Dell does not recommend carrying out any Registry edits to your operating system. Any mistakes made could cause your computer to stop working. The steps below are supplied as information only. Anyone attempting them would be well advised to have backed up their operating system and registry before making any changes. Again Dell Technologies recommend that if you do not fully understand what a registry change can do to your operating system, do not do it.

Swipes: Touchpad

  1. Click the Start Menu.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Go to Devices.

  4. Go to Touchpad.

  5. Click Additional Settings.

  6. Mouse Properties opens up a window, click the Dell Touchpad Tab.

  7. Click change Dell Touchpad settings.

  8. Dell touchpad properties open up a window, click Gestures.

  9. Click Multi Finger Gestures.

  10. Untick the check boxes for both the Three and Four finger gestures.

  11. Select Save.

Swipes: Touchscreen

  • Downgrade to a Windows Operating System that supports this (For example: Windows 8.1)

  • Disable edge swipe using Group Policies:

    1. Open a Run box. (Press the Windows and R together.)

    2. Type: gpedit.msc and select OK

    3. Go to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Edge UI in the left side column.

    4. Double-click or tap the Allow edge swipe policy in the right side column to edit it.

    5. Mark the check box next to Disabled and click Apply and OK.

    6. Close the application, sign out and back in to Windows and then restart the computer to see the changes take effect.

  • Disable the edge swipe using the Registry:

    1. Open a Run box. (Press the Windows and R keys together.)

    2. Type: regedit and select OK

    3. Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Edge UI in the left side column.

    4. Edit the text in the right side column to "AllowEdgeSwipe"=-.

    5. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Edge UI in the left side column.

    6. Edit the text in the right side column to "AllowEdgeSwipe"=dword:0000000.

    7. Exit and save changes.

    8. Sign out and back in to Windows and then restart the computer to see the changes take effect.

Gestures: Touchpad

  1. Click the Start Menu.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Go to Devices.

  4. Go to Touchpad.

  5. Click Additional Settings.

  6. Mouse Properties opens up a window, click the Dell Touchpad Tab.

  7. Click change Dell Touchpad settings.

  8. Dell touchpad properties open up a window, click Gestures.

  9. Turn Gestures off.

  10. Select Save.

Gestures: Touchscreen

  • Downgrade to a Windows Operating System that supports this (For example: Windows 8.1)

  • Use a combination of group policies and registry edits:

    1. Create a group policy.

    2. Open a Run box. (Press the Windows and R keys together.)

    3. Type: gpedit.msc and select OK

    4. Go to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Edge UI in the left side column.

    5. Double-click or tap the Allow edge swipe policy in the right side column to edit it.

    6. Mark the check box next to Disabled and click Apply and OK.

    7. Close the application, sign out and in to Windows and then restart the computer to see the changes take effect.

    8. Completely disable the Action Center using the Registry.

    9. Open a Run box. (Press the Windows and R keys together.)

    10. Type: regedit and select OK

    11. Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer in the left side column.

    12. Create a new DWORD with the following text in the right side column - DisableNotificationCenter=1.

    13. Completely disable New Action Center Sidebar and Restore Previous UI.

    14. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell in the left side column.

    15. Edit the text in the right side column to UseActionCenterExperience DWORD= 0 (default = 1).

    16. Exit and save changes.

    17. Sign out and back in to Windows and then restart the computer to see the changes take effect.

Pinch and Zoom: Touchpad

  1. Click the Start Menu.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Go to Devices.

  4. Go to Touchpad.

  5. Click Additional Settings.

  6. Mouse Properties opens up a window, click the Dell Touchpad Tab.

  7. Click change Dell Touchpad settings.

  8. Dell touchpad properties open up a window, click Gestures.

  9. Clear out the check box for the Zoom option.

  10. Select Save.

Pinch and Zoom: Touchscreen

  • Downgrade to a Windows Operating System that supports this (For example: Windows 8.1)

  • Alternatively disable the function in the applications, not the operating system. (see the section below.)

 

Disable Pinch and Zoom in Internet Browsers on Windows 10

Disable Pinch and Zoom in Chrome using a Command-Line Switch:

  1. Open a Run box. (Press the Windows and R keys together.)

  2. Type: CMD and select OK

  3. Enter the following command to change the directory:

    cd \Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application

  4. Enter the following command to run the command-line switch:

    chrome --disable-pinch

Disable Pinch and Zoom in Firefox using its preference settings:

  1. Open a Firefox tab.

  2. Type: about:config and press the Enter key

  3. Click the button promising to be careful and accepting the risk.

  4. In the search box type: Browser.gesture.pinch and double-click the entries that it pulls up

  5. Change their value to False and save and exit.

Disable Pinch and Zoom in Internet Explorer 11 using the Registry:

  1. Open a Run box. (Press the Windows and R keys together.)

  2. Type: regedit and select OK

  3. Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet_Explorer\Zoom in the left side column.

  4. Edit the text in the right side column to "ZoomDisabled"=dword:00000001.

  5. Exit and save changes.

Disable Pinch and Zoom in Microsoft Edge using the Registry:

  1. Set a default page zoom value in the More (…) menu in the Edge Browser.

  2. Open a Run box. (Press the Windows and R keys together.)

  3. Type: regedit and select OK

  4. Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local_Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\microsoft.microsoftedge.~\MicrosoftEdge\Zoom in the left side column. (where ~ represents a number that may change from computer to computer.)

  5. Create text in the right side column as dword: ZoomDisabled.

  6. Double-click ZoomDisabled and set its data to 1.

  7. Exit and save changes.
