NetWorker: Installation of third-party software on NVE appliance
Summary: This KB discusses installation of third-party software on NetWorker Virtual Environment (NVE).
Symptoms
Does the NetWorker Virtual Edition (NVE) appliance support installation of third-party utilities on the NVE operating system?
Cause
There is a request in an environment to install a third-party utility to perform some operation on the NVE, for example: password/user management, file system management, anti-virus, so on
Resolution
NetWorker engineering has confirmed that modifying the configuration of or adding extra software to NVE is not supported since the potential consequences are unknown.
NVEs differ from standard Linux server deployments in that:
- The NVE appliance is provided as an
"as-is"solution and includes the essential components necessary to perform its intended function. - Dell provides operating system updates through
OsRollup-YYYY-R#-V# packages. These are applied through a provided installation utility (avinstaller). - NetWorker package upgrades are provided through .avp packages and applied through a provided installation utility (avinstaller).
System rollups and NetWorker upgrades have strict operational expectations. Any unexpected changes to the NVE can cause them to malfunction or fail. Changes to the NVE which cause update failures require an NVE redeployment with a default configuration and NetWorker Disaster Recovery (nsrdr).
