Symptoms

Backup fails with:

Unable to create snapshot. Unable to take a snapshot for virtual machine 'vm-24655' after multiple retry attempts. An error occurred while quiescing the virtual machine. See the virtual machine's event log for details.

Review of virtual machine event logs shows no relevant errors.

Virtual Machines vmware.log shows:

[msg.snapshot.quiesce.startfail] Failed to start quiescing operation in the virtual machine.

Testing a snapshot with Quiesce Guest file system set completes successfully but shows Quiesce Guest File System = No.

Cause

The issue is outside of PPDM. Some kind of interaction between VMware Tools and the Guest OS.

Resolution

Uninstall and re-install VMware Tools on the virtual machine.

Test a snapshot and ensure Quiesce Guest File System = Yes.

Backups should now be able to complete.
