Symptoms

In SQL server configuration manager, -> SQL Server Network configuration -> Protocols for MSSQLSERVER -> TCP/IP

The customer modified TCP Dynamic ports to use 6201 instead of default port 1433. The SQL backup job fails with the following error messages.

153887:nsrsqlsv: Microsoft SQL server documentation provides details about the following SQL Server Provider error:
67945 nsrsqlsv NSR critical Cannot login to SQL Server Default Instance.
38008:nsrsqlsv: Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
153416:nsrsqlsv: (Error: 2)

Cause

In SQL previous versions, this issue can be fixed by modifying SQL native client configuration to specify the none default port as well. But since SQL 2022, SQL native client is no longer a part of SQL server installation, customer side refused to install this feature separately.

Resolution

If using a non-default TCP port, enable the "Named Pipes" protocol under SQL server network configuration.
