Symptoms

  • External users (AD/LDAP/NIS) with hyphens in their domain or username cannot log in using SSH or UI.
  • Authentication fails immediately after password submission.
  • The system resets the connection without granting access.

Affected Versions:

  • DDOS-7.13.1.10
  • DDOS-8.2.x

Example Log Entries (messages.engineering):

  • smu_user_is_user_exists_username: User "corp-eng\test" not found in /etc/passwd
smu_user_is_external_username_valid: returning FALSE for user: corp-eng\test
smu_session_is_session_username_valid: Session username is not valid
    Invalid user "corp-eng\test"
    Disconnected from user test.local\\test
Note: The domain name includes DNS domain name (a-b.c.com) and NetBIOS domain name (corp-eng).

Cause

The DDOS username (and domain name) verification logic did not correctly validate external usernames containing hyphens, resulting in failed authentication attempts.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in the following DDOS versions:

  • DDOS-7.13.1.20
  • DDOS-8.3.0.0

Upgrade to one of these versions to restore login functionality for external usernames with hyphens.

Workaround:
If upgrading is not feasible, contact Data Domain Support for a registry key workaround to bypass the validation issue.
