Isilon: After migrating to L3 cache, all SSDs are in REPLACE status

Summary: This issue can be seen when migrating from L3 to SSD or from SSD to L3.

Symptoms

All the SSDs are in [REPLACE] mode after switching to L3 cache.

Cause

While the drives are migrating to L3 cache, the status of the drives is supposed to change to [L3]. In this case, the drive migration was not successful, so all the SSDs are in [REPLACE] status.

Resolution

1) SSH to the node that is experiencing the problem.

2) Verify the bays and drives that are experiencing the issue by running the isi devices command. Note: This method shows SSDs.

Here is an example of what is seen:
isilon# isi devices
Node 1, [ OK ], [SED Node]
Bay 1 Lnum 11 [REPLACE] SN:******** /dev/da1
Bay 2 Lnum 12 [REPLACE] SN:******** /dev/da2

3) Use the format command to format the drives in [REPLACE] state.

isi devices -a format -d <Node Number>:<Bay Number>

For this example, run these commands.

isi devices -a format -d 1:1
isi devices -a format -d 1:2

4) Once the format is complete, run the isi devices command to verify that the format was successful. If the format was successful, the drive status shows [PREPARING] state.

isilon# isi devices
Node 1, [ OK ], [SED Node]
Bay 1 Lnum 11 [PREPARING] SN:******** /dev/da1
Bay 2 Lnum 12 [PREPARING] SN:******** /dev/da2

5) Wait for 20-30 minutes for the format process to complete. Once it finishes, your isi devices output should look like this.

isilon# isi devices
Node 1, [ OK ], [SED Node]
Bay 1 Lnum 11 [L3] SN:******** /dev/da1
Bay 2 Lnum 12 [L3] SN:******** /dev/da2
