Symptoms
Attempting to delete a child Storage Group (SG) in Unisphere for VMAX generates the error message: "Cannot delete an SG that is contained in another SG"
Error msg:
Resolution
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:
The storage group has been removed from parent and is now listed as a separate storage group.
Alternatively:
- Go to the Parent SG > Related objects > Child storage groups
- Select child SG
- Remove the desired SG from the parent first:

- Select the SG and delete:

Procedure using Solutions Enabler to delete a child SG:
- List any devices in the storage group: symsg -sid xxx show <SG name>
- Make devices NR: symdev -sid xxx -devs <dev:dev> not_ready
- Remove child SG from parent: symsg -sid xxx -sg <parent sg> remove sg <Child SG>
- Remove devices from storage group: symaccess -sid xxx remove devs <dev:dev> -type storage -name <SG name>
- Delete storage group: symsg -sid xxx delete <SG name>
