Symptoms



Attempting to delete a child Storage Group (SG) in Unisphere for VMAX generates the error message: "Cannot delete an SG that is contained in another SG"

Error msg:

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:
  1. Go to the Parent SG > Related objects > Child storage groups
  2. Select child SG
  3. Remove the desired SG from the parent first:
kA2j0000000R8h3CAC_1_0
The storage group has been removed from parent and is now listed as a separate storage group.
  1. Select the SG and delete:
kA2j0000000R8h3CAC_1_1

Procedure using Solutions Enabler to delete a child SG:
  1. List any devices in the storage group: symsg -sid xxx show <SG name>
  2. Make devices NR: symdev -sid xxx -devs <dev:dev> not_ready
  3. Remove child SG from parent: symsg -sid xxx -sg <parent sg> remove sg <Child SG>
  4. Remove devices from storage group: symaccess -sid xxx remove devs <dev:dev> -type storage -name <SG name>
  5. Delete storage group: symsg -sid xxx delete <SG name>
