Dell EMC Unity: hourly snapshot schedule

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

First hourly snapshot is rounding off to nearest hour instead of taking exactly after an hour.

Snapshots can be scheduled to be taken automatically at specific times or frequencies. These schedules can be applied both file and block resources, and a single schedule may be applied to many individual resources. When creating custom snapshot schedules, the options are similar to those available when taking a manual snapshot.

Cause

Always the first scheduled snap will be taken to the nearest hour. For example when we initiate an hourly scheduled snap at 12.15 PM, the first scheduled snap will be taken at 01.00 PM instead of 01.15 PM, as the unity will round of to the nearest hour and following snaps will be taken every hour there after.

Also to be noted since unity round off the time, depending on the time zone we see below note as description on snap schedule.
  • If the customer time zone is GMT + XX.30 Hrs.  Every 1 hours at 30 minutes past the hour
  • And if the customer time zone is at GMT + XX.00 Hrs.  Every 1 hours
This is because time displayed in unity Unisphere is in local time zone, unlike GMT/UTC in previous generation VNX or CX. But still the underlining process and tracking are in GMT/UTC.

Resolution

This is expected behavior and working as designed. No action is needed.
