Avamar: Checkpoint fails with MSG_ERR_EXCEPTION

Symptoms
All the Avamar services are up and running.
The grid is fully operational.
Avamar checkpoints are failing with error MSG_ERR_EXCEPTION:

Both the gsan.log (/data01/cur/gsan.log) and err.log (/data01/cur/err.log) report an error while reading a stripe (Too many links):
