Symptoms

If you observe 71678049 environmental interface DATA STALE failure messages on systems running VNX OE 05.33.009.5.184 or later, these failures will normally clear a few minutes later and have no impact on data access. These messages are transient and can be ignored. The messages are caused by a rare but known issue in which the BMCs (Baseboard Management Controller) does not respond for a short period of time.

Be aware that 71678049 environmental interface DATA STALE failure messages can occur against various pieces of hardware within the Storage Processor chassis and are random and unpredictable. You may or may not see some or all of these types of failure messages. The focus is to ensure that the failures clear a few minutes later.

Examples of the types of DATA STALE alerts you may see in Unisphere or a dialhome Service Request:

SP A             71678049 SP Suitcase 0 environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
SP B             71678049 SP Flt Reg 0 environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
SP B             71678049 SP Slave Port 0 environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
SP A             71678049 SP BMC 0 environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
BaB0             71678049 Base Module environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
SP B             71678049 SP management module 0 environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
IoB0             71678049 IO Module environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
Bus0 Enc0 Fan2   71678049 Fan environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.
Bus0 Enc0 PowA   71678049 Power Supply environmental interface failure detected. Reason: DATA STALE.

Cause

This is rare but known issue of a brief lack of response from the BMCs (Baseboard Management Controller) causing DATA STALE alerts.

These events are transient errors and clear after a few minutes on arrays running 05.33.009.5.184 or later.

Resolution

No action is required if the faults clear automatically.

If the faults don't clear automatically, Dell EMC Customer Support Center MUST be engaged and the next level of troubleshooting involves reseating the DPE CPU modules (Storage Processors) one by one in accord with the procedure for the platform in Dell EMC SolVe Desktop. Monitor the array for more messages after DPE CPU module reseat.

ATTENTION:
If the SP "unsafe to remove LED" (black with white hand) is ON, DO NOT proceed re-seat SP.

Engineering has confirmed this is a BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) firmware issue and they are working on a resolution.

There is no ETA of a code fix at this time.

Contact the Dell EMC Customer Support Center or your Service Representative for assistance and quote this article number if you have any questions or issues from these events.
