- Avamar VSS Plug-in for Exchange 7.2.1
- Exchange 2007 CCR cluster client

Exchange backup is failing with error: avexvss Error <8801>: ERROR: Win32 call L"CreateFile" failed.

Relevant portion of the logs:

Cause

The "EMC Avamar Exchange 2007 Backup Agent for <Cluster_Name>" service is set to start with the 'NT SYSTEM' account

This account does not have the necessary rights to perform API calls/backup operations of clustered Exchange Databases.

Resolution

- On each Exchange Server, member of the cluster, execute the command "services.msc"
Set "EMC Avamar Exchange 2007 Backup Agent for <Cluster_Name>" service to start on behalf of the Avamar Backup User

- On each Exchange Server, in Failover Cluster Manager, find "EMC Avamar Exchange 2007 Backup Agent for <Cluster_Name>", right-click and bring the service offline and then back online
