Symptoms
Customer failed to start "compress now" from one LUN in Unisphere. There are still 18.7TB free space in the pool.
Getting error code 0x900a301 when trying to perform "compress now".
Cause
Compress Now operation automatically starts a Move process to a compression enabled storage resource residing within the same Pool, which decreases the free space by the size of the new LUN (same as the source LUN).
The pool still has 18.7TB free space, but 72% full and there is an alert because the default capacity threshold is set to 70%.
The pool still has 18.7TB free space, but 72% full and there is an alert because the default capacity threshold is set to 70%.
Resolution
Customer modified the capacity threshold to 80% and is able to run the compress now .
Step 1: Go to Pool properties >> Usage tab.
Step 2: Change the Alert Threshold to 80%, "Apply" the setting. Note: actual value is customer defined.
Step 3: Go back to the LUN you want to compress, choose "compress now" from the "More Actions".
If the customer doesn't want to change default threshold, then suggest customer to add more disks or remove some unused LUNs in the Pool to bring down the Used space below 70%.
Note: Please upgrade to code 4.1.2 before using Compression as that release fixes some of the issues with Compress.

Additional Information
Compress Now, also a new feature introduced in Unity OE version 4.1, is used to compress existing data within a compression enabled storage resource. This feature is only available for compression enabled storage resources. When selected, the Compress Now operation automatically starts a Move process to a compression enabled storage resource residing within the same Pool. As the Move operation copies data to a compression enabled storage resource, the data is compressed. The Compress Now operation is most commonly utilized after enabling compression on an existing storage resource to attain compression savings on existing data.
