Instructions

This article describes how to;
  • Allow backups to run 'silently' on an Avamar client with no notification to the end user
  • Prevent a user from canceling backups which are initiated from the Avamar server
  • Prevent a user from initiating backups and restores from the client interface

This is possible by removing access to the Avamar client interface executable (avscc.exe). By default this appears in the Windows system tray.

Avamar client interface executable (avscc.exe)

The AVSCC UI allows users to interact with the Avamar client.
Removing access to the interface prevents users from canceling or initiating backups.

If the Avamar client is already installed

Select the AVSCC UI in the system tray, right click and select exit.

Select the AVSCC GUI in the system tray, right click and select exit

Locate the Avamar 'var' installation folder.

Create a file called avscc.cmd and add the parameter --nowindow as shown in the screenshot below.

Create a file named avscc.cmd and add the parameter --nowindow

Save and close the avscc.cmd file.

Restart the "Backup Agent" using the Windows services screen.
Restart the "Backup Agent" via the Windows services screen

The user interface should no longer launch when the system is restarted.

The Avamar server can still initiate backups on the client since the Backup Agent service operates independently to the AVSCC.

avagent continues to listen on port 28002 for work orders from the Avamar server. It launches avtar to run backup and restore tasks.

If the client is not yet installed:

Push installation using msiexec commands can be used to install Avamar clients on Windows computers.

The UICOMPONENT flag specifies whether to enable the Avamar client with the standard UI or as an agent process with no user interface.

For more information about this functionality, see the Avamar system Administration Guide.

Additional Information

If the Desktop/Laptop feature is enabled, users can restore backups by directing their browser to the Avamar server.
