PowerEdge: Error log found after install HBA355i driver in Linux-based operating systems.
Summary: Error log found after installing HBA355i driver (SWB:VVM42 - version 34.15.04.00) with configuration 12x3.5 + 4x2.5 (SAS/SATA) in Linux-based operating systems
Symptoms
Error message logged in OS logs after installation of the HBA 355i driver SWB: VVM42 (version 34.15.04.00) in Linux-based operating systems in presence of a dual backplane(front and rear BP)
Inside dmesg, you may see this error message:
mpt3sas_com0: failure at /home/abuild/rpmbuild/BUILD/lsi-mpt3sas-34.15.04.00/obj/default/mpt3sas_transport.c:868/mpt3sas_transport_port_add()!
Coming to the functional impact the SES management is not a possible operation on the backplane which is not registered in OS using OS vendor-provided tools/utilities.
(example: smp_utils and so forth) Basic OS commands, believed to be frequently used example: lsblk, fdisk, parted and so on, are not impacted. IO operations and drive enumeration are not impacted.
Cause
The issue is under certain conditions(relates to the timing of event generation for device addition), the Linux driver version 34.15.04.00 is unable to register the second backplane into the OS.
This error message is logged at the boot-up time, however, apparently looks to be a timing issue.
Resolution
This is reporting behavior and not a functional impact.
All the information can be verified from OS tools like (lsscsi, lslk, sg_utils) and Dell utilities like OMSA, PERCLI, so on.
Update the HBA 355i driver to the latest version.
