Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 can fail to boot if the server is populated with HBA355e and configured with ZFS partitions.

Summary: A failure to boot is experienced when fifty or more Zettabyte File System (ZFS) partitioned drives are attached to a Dell HBA355e controller.

Symptoms

Users with Ubuntu 24.04 can experience an "error: out of memory" event when attempting to boot. This occurs at the grub level with a wait time of 45 minutes to an hour.

Users with Ubuntu 22.04.4 can experience a Red Screen of Death (RSOD) when attempting to boot. This also occurs at the grub level with a wait time of 45 minutes to an hour.

This issue can occur on any PowerEdge system configured with the following:

  • Dell HBA355e controller with a minimum of one enclosure with a high number of drives
  • Ubuntu 22.04.x or 24.04 installed on local drive
  • Fifty or more ZFS partitioned drives controlled by HBA355e
Note:  Red Hat and SUSE operating systems are not affected.

Cause

Root cause analysis is underway.

Resolution

Dell Engineering advises the following workaround for the noted symptoms:

  • Disconnect the enclosure attached to the HBA355e. 
  • Boot to the operating system and then hot attach the enclosure to the HBA355e.
    • Until the root cause is learned and a solution is provided, this workaround must be followed.
