PowerStore: An unstable drive may cause software module panic or performance degradation

Summary: An unstable drive may cause a software module panic or performance degradation.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

An unstable drive (repeatedly going offline and online) may remain alive in the system. This scenario may trigger an unexpected internal software module panics or intermittent performance degradations.

Cause

A threshold of drive bounce count is implemented in PowerStoreOS software. To prevent negative impacts on the system, this threshold forces an unstable drive to fail if it bounces multiple times within a certain period of time.

However, a software issue has been identified in the handling and counting logic of this threshold. This issue may cause the system to not fail the unstable drive at the correct timing. This scenario may eventually result in software module panics or intermittent performance degradations.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in PowerStoreOS version 4.1.

Workaround

With earlier versions, replace the defective drive.
