PPDM: SQL AppAware (VM Direct) Configuration Fails Due to Proxy and Port Issues

Summary: SQL AppAware (VM Direct) configuration in PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) fails due to proxy authorization errors and network port restrictions. The issue is typically caused by blocked communication between the PPDM server, the target VM, and the Data Domain system. ...

Symptoms

Affected Products:

  • PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM)

Symptoms:

  • SQL AppAware (VM Direct) configuration fails during setup
  • Error in PPDM:
    • Unable to register PowerProtect Agent Service.
HTTPSConnectionPool(host='PPDM-server-ip', port=8443): Max retries exceeded with url: /api/v2/adm/agentRegistration
(Caused by ProxyError('Cannot connect to proxy.', OSError('Tunnel connection failed: 407 Proxy Authorization Required')))
  • vProxy Agent installation fails with:
    • Command 'C:\Windows\system32\msiexec.exe' terminated with exit code 1601

Cause

  • Port 7000 is not reachable from the PPDM server to the target VM
  • Administrator privileges are missing for deploying the SQL AppAware agent inside the VM
  • Proxy configuration blocks outbound communication, resulting in a 407 Proxy Authorization Required error

Resolution

To resolve the issue:

  1. Ensure network connectivity:

    • Open port 8443 from the VM to the PPDM server
    • Open ports 111, 2049, and 2052 from the VM to the Data Domain system
    • Open port 7000 from PPDM to the target VM
  2. Use administrator credentials for the FLR Agent during SQL AppAware configuration

  3. Review proxy settings to ensure that the PPDM server can communicate externally without proxy authentication errors

Note: VM Direct performs block-level backups, while SQL AppAware uses an internal agent for SQL transaction log backups. Both components require uninterrupted communication with PPDM and DD systems.
