PowerScale SyncIQ replicating more data than exists in the dataset

Summary: In rare circumstances, SyncIQ can report replicating more data than exists in the source dataset.

Symptoms

SyncIQ job runs for a long time without completing.
SyncIQ reporting more data sent than exists:

isi sync jobs reports view <policy_name>

The same work items restarting:

isi_for_array -Q 'zgrep -ho "<policy_name>.*Read work item.*" /var/log/isi_migrate.log*' |sort | uniq -c | sort -n

Cause

SyncIQ dynamically allocates workers to service SyncIQ jobs. Each worker is assigned to a work item that includes.

  1. A range of work that is to be done and
  2. A checkpoint to mark where the work item starts
In rare circumstances, due to the dynamic allocation of work, a work item never completes. Each restart begins at the original checkpoint. The work item is never completed before being dynamically reallocated to service another SyncIQ job.

The result is that work items are never complete while SyncIQ continues to log and report replication of the same files.
