Sintomi

Unity presents LUNs to VMware ESXi.
Veeam is used to backup the data on the ESXi host.
ESXi host and Veeam host are mapped to each LUN.

Veeam backup is successful.
But, the Restore fails with error message:
Unable to execute write operation using advanced transport, failing over to network mode...
ERR |VDDK error: 16000 (One of the parameters supplied is invalid)
(The error code may vary, but the informational message will be the same)

Causa

This error occurs when the LUNs presented to the Backup Proxy for Direct SAN access are read-only.

Risoluzione

Unity does not have an option to present the source LUN directly to the host as read-only.
If we search the error code on the Veeam official site there is a known article for the same.
https://www.veeam.com/kb2005 This hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.

As per the Veeam article the customer has to try direct SAN restore operation on thick LUN and try the below restore type:
  • Entire VM restore.
  • VM hard disk restore.
  • Initial Replication of a Replica.

Post that the issue is resolved,

Note: This solution is applicable for all direct SAN restores.

For other products, confirm that these LUNs are presented with Read-only access, refer to your SAN configuration interface.
If the disk is presented as Read-only, customer must either connect the volume with write access or use a different transport mode.
