PowerProtect Data Manager: Slow File-Level Restore from File-Based Backups

Riepilogo: File-Level Restore (FLR) operations from File-Based Backups (FBB) in PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) can experience slow performance when restoring data from volumes containing many files. This behavior is a known issue and has been addressed in later PPDM versions. ...

Sintomi

File-Level Restore (FLR) operations are extremely slow when restoring from File-Based Backups (FBB).
  • The issue is most noticeable on volumes with millions of files.
  • Restore jobs appear to stop responding or take an excessive amount of time to complete.
  • The issue does not occur when using Block-Based Backups (BBB).

Causa

This issue is due to a known limitation in File-Level Restore processing when using File-Based Backups on file systems with a huge number of files.

The FLR mechanism in FBB environments encounters performance bottlenecks when enumerating and restoring large file sets.
These bottlenecks result in degraded performance or apparent system unresponsiveness during restore operations.

Risoluzione

Permanent Fix:

The issue has been resolved in the following versions:
  • PowerProtect Data Manager 20.1 Patch 1
  • PowerProtect Data Manager 20.2 and later
Upgrade to a fixed version to permanently resolve the issue.

Workaround:

If upgrading is not immediately feasible:

Use Block-Based Backups (BBB) instead of File-Based Backups (FBB) for affected workloads. BBB does not exhibit the same performance limitations during File-Level Restore. Attempt restores in smaller chunks if possible.
