Need to know what the most powerful/fastest CPU is that I can install into my E310.  It is currently 2.8 Ghz HT.  Thank you.

Hello AGP123,

The Dimension E310 supports the Intel Pentium 4 6xx series and 5xx series and Celeron 3xx series processors. The system was shipped with the Intel 915GV Express Chipset. Please check out the list of compatible processors under Compatible Products

Hope this helps!

The 3100/E310 motherboard, does not support either Dual Core or Core 2 Duo processors.

The largest supported processor is the Socket LGA 775, Prescott P4, 3.4G, 800FSB.

Prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS version A04 is installed, when support for new CPU was added.

Install the SSD, install Windows on it and set it as the primary boot device.

Yes, the Intel Pentium 4 SL8Q5 650 3.4Ghz / 2M / 800 Socket 775, should work, it's on the Intel Compatible Products list here:

http://ark.intel.com/products/27734/Intel-915GV-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller

But, personally, I would keep the default 2.8, as you will see very little difference in speed, between the 2.8GHz and 3.4GHz and may not be worth the aggro of upgrading, as they are both single core CPU's.

Thanks to both of you for the information.  I do have the Bios updated to A04, and thermal paste at the ready.  Just need to get the Prescott.  Thank you again.

I have one of these machines and thought you may find it of interest that the biggest boost in performance comes from using an SSD as a boot drive.

How do you do that?

I found this online Prescott 3.4 GHz 1M 800fsb SL7J8  LGA 775 CPU.  Everything looks good, but not sure about the SL7J8.  Is this the one that I need?  Thank you

The Prescott 3.4 GHz 1M 800fsb SL7J8  LGA 775 processor should be fine.

Remember to check that BIOS Version A04, is installed, when support for new CPU's was added.

I do have one more question.  I have found 2 CPU's, and both have the same specs, except that one has a CPUID of  OF43H, and the other is OF34H.  The other thing is one shows Nest stepping Q87X, and Next production stepping SL7PY, and the other CPU states none of this.  Also, I am guessing that L2 cache of 1 is equivalant to the other CPU showing it as 1024?  Still learning so I thought I better double check.  Thank you.

The SL7PYIntel Pentium 4 550J processor should work.

Are these 2 CPU's essentially the same thing?
