Inspiron 1525 CPU upgrade
Yes I know it is an old laptop. But if I make it run a bit faster by spending £20 to £ 30, it is worth doing.
current spec:
Intel Celeron M 550 (Socket 479 mPGA, 2.00GHz ) on Dell 0U990C Motherboard.
I am having trouble to select an comptable CPU for it.
Target CPUs but I am not sure about the 479 mPGA :
- Intel Mobile Celeron Dual-Core T3100 (478-pin micro-FCPGA package)---478?
- T3300 and T3500 which have the same 478 socket
- Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T5750 (479-ball micro-FCBGA)---479 Yes, but BGA?
can anyone advice on which CPU to use, or anything else that I should consider? Your help is very much appreciated!
Even better if someone has done this before?
Regards

You can't use BGA CPUs - they aren't socketed (they're designed to be soldered to the system board).
Just about any core 2 Duo on the 800 MHz bus will work just fine, in micro FC-PGA format.
The newer Core i and Celerons derived from them - and the 1066 MHz Core 2s -- will not work.

thanks for the advice. My problem is that I cannot fine a exact match of micro FC-PGA. For example: T3100 is 478-pin micro-FCPGA package, not 479 pin. I think they are not the same. correct me if I am wrong.

478 and 479 are often used interchangeably.
The Core 2 Duo FC-PGAs will work in the 1525 as long as the bus speed is 800 Mhz or lower.

I think CPU-Z is a bit misleading. It says my CPU is Celeron M 550 2GHz socket 479 micro FC-PGA. Intel website indicates it's "PBGA479, PPGA478".
After all, I should be looking for a 478 ping mPGA anyway!
on the 479 and 478 issue, I have fund 2 interesting sites, they both suggest that the 498 CPUs cannot be used on 479 sockets, even it can fit.

ok thats great, cause i can't find meany 479 CPUs, so i just have to make sure that the bus speed isn't faster then 800mhz then?

I have an Inspiron 1525 I am running a T9300 2.5 GHz with 800MHz Front side bus. I have not seen one that works and is faster. I hope this finds you well.

Thanks for the Post, just got one today and it needs a CPU and memory boost. Will replace CPU with the T9300 and boost memory from 2GB to 4GB.

how did your upgrade work?
I just upgraded the ram to four gig. I am interested to know how that cpu worked out and what else you did to make it work.

The upgrade went without a hitch and works just fine. Would advise making the upgrade.

I just swapped CPU's. I did check that the latest Bios had been installed and maxed out the memory. Gave it to a church school where students run some education programs like Mavis Beacon Typing program etc. Works great there.
