Thanks for your question. It appears we do have some conflicting documentation on the memory capacities supported on the E5440. I'm now working to have those errors corrected.
According to my internal premier page, I am able to order a Latitude E5440 with 2x8GB for a total of 16GB total memory. Here's the memory part number in case you want to call Dell sales to order: N2M64 - 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L Memory.
I was just double checking myself here and I didn't find any references to memory amounts in the User's guide. If I'm overlooking something, please let me know. I did however pull up the Owner's manual to double check the specifications. I'm seeing both the PDF and the HTML Owner's manuals as being correct:

So, E5440 can have a maximum of 16GB RAM?
Because, in the user guide, it is still written 8GB max.

The E5440 supports a maximum of 16GBs. I will submit a 2nd request for the user's guide to be updated to reflect this fact. I'll post back when I can.
