XPS M1530 best cpu upgrade possible

Hi everybody....

I am an owner of a XPS M1530, is a good laptop but i am definily tired of it's extremply slow processor, i currently have an Intel T7250 processor which runs @ 2.0 GHz on it ... the problem is most games today are just poorly ported from console, so they need a huge processor speed to run smootly (for example Silen Hill Homecoming).. in this case overclocking GPU doesn't really help in more than 2 fps, in games which are made for PC like crysis or HL2 you can see a big increase in fps overclocking the GPU....

The thing is a have 2 doubts to proceed to buy a cpu, the first one... acording to CPU Z the chipset of my laptop is:

Mobile Intel PM965 Express Chipset

But if you see the supported cpu's list, the T7250 isn't there.... so thats make think that my real chipset is:

Mobile Intel GME965 Express Chipset

This one supports the T7250 processor.

Anyway boths chipsets supports similars hi-end laptop processors, so my big question is, which is the topest processor that can i get???  i am pretty interesting about a:

Core 2 Extreme X7900 @2.8 GHz which is about ~$260 - $300 new on Ebay

or it is physically impossible to do that? i meant becauses temperature problems or my biggest fear UNSUPPORTED cpu in the BIOS......  or should i not to take any risk and just bought a bored:

Core 2 Duo T9500 @2.6 GHz  wich is about ~$230-$280 new on Ebay

Anyway both cpu are almost the same price but i think the Core 2 Extreme is a way lot better than the Core 2 Duo.. what do you think guys? ah and does anyone know wich is the list of supported processors by the BIOS for the A12 rev. of XPS M1530?? i dont wanna get a blue screen of death... =S

Thaks for helping.

Either of those should work - that said, while the T9500 is an option from Dell, the Extreme wasn't  -- and it may not be fully supported, so you're on your own.  One thing to consider:  if you have a warranty, you lose it when you upgrade the CPU.  Also, since this model is known to have the defective nVidia chip problem, you may have trouble if you need a repair - so keep the original CPU.

It's not just a matter of whether the system can power the CPU - this is a lightweight system, and burdening it with a much hotter-running CPU is a sure recipe for degrading stability and shortening the component life.

That, plus the mediocre video chip - which can't be upgraded - means that the X-series Extreme CPU is not a good idea for this system.

Thanks for replay

Do you think there is a way to know if the X7900 is supported for the xps m1530?? i know it has a TDP of 44W and my current cpu has a TDP of 35W but the video card is only 25W and the PSU is 90W so i dont think it will be a power problem there. And about my warranty well its almost gone, it has only one more month so i dont care about it.

so my main doubt now is how to know if the X7900 is supported by the bios????

regards.

Your system may be new enough that it has a "fixed" GPU - the original runs are failing in massive numbers - they can't cope with normal operation, let alone overclocking.  For that matter, if you're overclocking and running the chip, you may be lucky to see it last the warranty - and remember it's not a separate card, so if/when it fails, the entire mainboard needs to be replaced.

Well i dont think that the 8600M GT GDDR 3 is all that bad... it let me play most of the game i wanted.. besides if it is necessary  i can overclock it a lot !!! and never get more than 75°C, and my native resolution is pretty low 1280x800 and you must know that when you are playing at low resolutions the power of the CPU is extremely important thats why i think in my current system the "bottle neck" is the T7250 @ 2.0GHz ... most of the current games requires at least 2.2 GHz core 2 duo.. and about the life time,,, i will be happy if it can survive 2 o 3 years more =)
