Optiplex 3050 SFF Won't power on

I have an Optiplex 3050 SFF  that when plugged in I get the green led for a few seconds but the unit won't power on. The only indication that I have power going to the unit is the green led for a few seconds. I tried removing the CMOS battery for 15 minutes and no change. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First, I meant to say in my post above "Replacement PSU's are fairly easy to get," not "rarely."  I'll edit it.

That is a possibility.  On PSU's with the test button, a bad PSU with the test button pushed can still light the green light and power the fans, depending on how bad it is.  In the case of your 3050, it doesn't seem to be getting power, if any.

If the MB were bad, which seems more rare than a bad PSU, the 3050 woukd at least be giving you a blink code thru the power light.  There hasn't been any power light blink codes leading us to another PC component.

In come cases, blinking amber power light can mean bad PSU, and solid amber bad MB or bad MB component (CPU, etc.).  But your 3050 hasn't been doing that either.  If a PSU is bad enough, like dead for example, a blink code won't happen.  PSU's also show other signs of going out.

From what I can tell, you removed the things redxps630 wanted you to, yet, when applying power and attempting to power on, no green light that stayed on.  Through all of this, the 3050 has mostly been playing dead except for 3 sec. of green light.

if psu does not have a BIST button,

  1. Turn off the system.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the PSU, and wait for 15 seconds.
  3. After 15 seconds, connect the power cord back to the PSU.
  4. The LED light should stay on for 3 seconds and then turn off.
  • If the BIST LED lights up, then the power supply can deliver power to the system but something else is impeding the POST process. The next step is to check whether the power button might be at fault.  unplug pwr sw cable from motherboard pin header. short the motherboard pwr sw pins temporarily using a flat head screwdriver to see if that can turn it on. If it's not you should go to the No POST troubleshooting.

If that doesn't work, you'll find a couple of troubleshooting guides here:  https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/optiplex-3050-desktop/docs

If you are in a No POST situation after testing psu and power button, then

try replace cmos battery with a brand new cr2032.

then clear cmos settings by motherboard cmos_CLR jumper.  F2F4E3B0-2355-46E8-9BB1-8726564C5E91.jpeg

disconnect all usb devices from pc, remove all memory then reinstall only one memory stick in dimm1.  Try this for each ram stick.

How to Run a Power Supply Unit Self Test On a Dell Desktop or All-in-One Computer

Screenshot_20220927-144456.png

Seen as you've already gone thru some of the tests, the PSU may have just went kaput.  A light lighting for a little bit and then going going out can be a sign of it.

Replacement PSU's are fairly easy to get.  So are PSU testers on Amazon, but then you'd need a 24-pin to 6-pin adapter.

Dell OEM 180w PSU's available for the 3050:

I gues I'm a bit confused.  I thought the LED lighting for 3 seconds is what it should do and that it means the problem is after the power supply.  Are you saying that even if I get the green LED for 3 seconds the power supply could still be bad?
