Precision 5750 scratchy sound (HDD?)
Hey guys,
I have 5750 model with max out hw specs - I noticed when I for example click on window and move it around that laptop make like little scratchy noise - the noise stops when I drop the window, but when I hold the window with mouse and move around - the noise is very consistent and present. Same thing happening when Im moving mouse around without even holding any window (although its less noisy than with window in hold)
Its not super noisy but definitely noticeable.
I wanted to ask if this is something normal, or if it can be fixed somehow ? Im assuming its HDD related?
Thank for explanation.

@Kells your Precision may have a problem similar to this one:

This is just a guess.

Hey thank you -
Im sending you the recordings bellow:
From the litle distance - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wctOHeEXP-R1IuJ8cm7CDqbFMCUpXsHF/view?usp=sharing
Directly on laptop - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MJdxTc6G2JXLj2A9sl546NcjZtzhft5c/view?usp=sharing
When there is the scratchy sound - im moving with window with mouse. Its the same sound when for example laptop loading something - so its something HDD related? But why this noise is made even when im moving around with mouse or windows?

Kells,
Unfortunately, I cannot hear any noise on the first recording from a little distance and the second recording does not load. Can you try recording it again?

I suggest to use headphones.

@Kells thanks for the records! I am able to hear the noise in both videos. The noise from your Precision is pretty similar to the noise from my Precision. Here is my record:

In my case, the coil whine noise is the strongest when I work with a graphics intensive software and use the touchpad of the laptop.

@nerijusgaliauskas - yes, I would say the sound in your recording is pretty much the same. So this mean its just the common thing for precision laptops? Is there anything we can do about it ?

In addition, you can find a similar record made by another guy here:

It's hard to say. We need more reports. I see that there are at least two reports of the coil whine issue with Precision 5750:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/ilzk39/replacement_because_of_coil_whine/

In my case, I can reduce the coil whine noise by disabling the C-States option in the BIOS. However, I keep the C-States enabled all the time, because this option reduces the temperature of CPU during the idle.

@nerijusgaliauskas ye I cannot afford to heat up the laptop more so I need to leave it enabled...
The tech in the PM says he cannot hear anything in the recording so its kinda frustrating. There is clearly scratchy sound and I want to know why, because its annoying - is it graphic? hdd? - laptop for almost 6K with scratching sound every time I move window with my mouse? You must be kidding....

I found out intersting thing - that while im using my laptop with WD19TB dock - the scratchy sound comes directly from the dock (not from the laptop) - is this information telling us something about the issue? When Im not using dock - the sound coming from the laptop as described above.

Have the same problem with scratchy sound. It stops when I disable nvidia gpu and only use intel. It is not appropriate for the cost of this laptop

I'm also suffering from this "bug". My Precision 5750 makes this annoying HDD-scratching noise when plugged in to AC or the dock.
My workaround for now is to disable the turbo boost of the CPU. This reduces the noise significally.
But for a business laptop of such a high price I would not expect that kind of problems. Very annoying.
